The Dovers – Bucyrus Jewels
Dover Sod Farms, Inc. is a family-owned and -operated business located in Bucyrus, Kansas. In business for over 40 years, Gary and Carol Dover began the company in 1972 and have continued to expand.
According to the company website, “Through the years, Gary Dover dreamed of new ways to harvest and install sod that would make it easier on crews, more consistent in production and more profitable through labor savings and efficient handling.”
In 1991, a product called the Magnum Harvester was incorporated into the turf farm business. After growing the product line for several years the company branched out and moved to a large manufacturing building in Hillsdale, Kansas.
Today there are two companies: Bucyrus Equipment Company and Dover Sod Farms. Son Steven Dover runs the daily operations of Bucyrus Equipment in Hillsdale, and son Ronnie Dover handles day-to-day operations of Dover Sod Farms, Inc. (named an ABC Home Makeover Contractor of Choice) in Bucyrus, Kansas.
The Dovers are this month’s jewel because their history inspires and reminds us that hard work and good ethics really can pay off. It is also nearing spring, and grass, lawns, sod, work, machines, sunshine, mowing (we digress, sorry) led us into writing about this community jewel.
