Why we think Joni Mitchell and “Mildred’s Crime Show” is a Community Jewel

Local resident Joni Mitchell achieved her dreams simply with desire and talent.

Working at a Louisburg restaurant, Joni would joke with us about how she and her husband would have to “rob a bank” to retire. We didn’t realize how serious she was until we found out about her Short Story, “Mildred’s Crime Show,” which won Best Short Screenplay and Audience Choice Award from the Kansas City Women in Film & TV Group (KCWIFT) last year.

The story features an elderly couple, who, realizing they are running out of money, decide to rob a bank. The only problem is — they are in their 70s.

Joni’s story resonates with many people and she embraces this with humor, wit and passion.

Joni’s Facebook page, “Mildred’s Crime Show,” created its first post in March asking for donations to start filming her words. The KCWIFT group provided fiscal sponsorship which meant that any donation made is tax deductible as a charitable donation. They were hoping to receive about $3000 to make it a high quality short film.

Since then, donations have come in from surrounding businesses and people. A director was hired as was a leading lady, Marilyn Hall.

“She [Ms Hall] did so great at the staged reading at Kansas City Film Festival and will bring Mildred to life perfectly,” Joni said.

Other people and groups participating in the event are:

Nicholaus James of Yellobrick Studios – Cinematographer.
Louisburg Kansas Police Department – Playing the part of the cops in the bank robbery.
Desmond McIntyre – Ethan, the very “helpful” guy at the bank.
Doug Dowell – Frank, the husband of Mildred.

Filming begins June 21, 2019 in Louisburg. A local resident donated her home for filming, allowing the entire community to pull together.

Joni’s hard work and entrepreneurship has allowed her to achieve a personal goal, and other than simply being an incredibly nice person, we applaud her success and look forward to seeing the film this fall.
